Running With Scissors

Well, as you can see my blog has undergone some major cosmetic surgery, thanks to the multi-talented Nicholas and his ability to interpret mysterious computer language. So I now have what could very possibly be the girliest blog in the universe. Hooray. Particularly exciting: the 'recipe of the week'. Which means that I shall have to start cooking again. I obtained a new cookbook last night at the Wollongong show (obviously I overcame my laziness and dragged myself there last night). A 'vegan cook zine with a pirate theme', written by two friends of mine whose recipes I have oft sampled and admired. I'm not actually vegan anymore, the lure of Cadbury chocolate and bakery treats being my downfall, however I still only cook vegan food. I think it's the challenge that appeals to me.

The cookbook was the best thing about the show. I think it will be the last hardcore show I go to for quite some time.

It's a barbecue kind of day today. If only I had a barbecue, money to buy ingredients, and the will to socialise in a large group.

Must go and make music now.

Tired, hot and with a budding headache. Whingy as usual. I just had my viola lesson, as soon as my teacher walked into the living room I realised that there was a half-full bottle of beer sitting on the coffee table. So now she must think that I drink in the afternoon before my lesson. Perfect. She went back out to her car to retrieve a music stand and I quickly hid the offending bottle behind a chair. For some reason I get very concerned about my viola teacher thinking that I am a drunken slob, so every Thursday afternoon becomes a mad rush to tidy the living room and get rid of all Ben's empty beer bottles and all my empty cigarette packets. ( I seem to have a problem with putting my empty packets in the bin. I've been known to carry up to four empty cigarette packets in one handbag. I think it's cos I have a deep-seated fear of throwing cigarettes away by accident. Same reason why I keep up to 6 months worth of expired weekly travelpasses in my wallet).

I had my interview for the Conservatorium on Wednesday. It went OK, I think, I hope. I was so nervous beforehand that I feared I might vomit. Not the best way to get yourself acccepted into the city's premier musical education institution. The two musicologists who interviewed me were very nice and chatty, which was a relief. Of course I did wonder if, behind the politeness, they both making a mental note to cross me off the candidate list for being a gibbering idiot. I stumbled over the word 'tonality', and laughed perhaps a little too much at the one or two jokes they made. Ah well, at least I managed to keep my breakfast in my stomach.

then I had to sit a music skills test, which was quite hideous. It was like those logic tests that they used to make you take in primary school (which I always did terribly at) but a musical version. Strange, ambiguous questions. The test was held in a lecture theatre with those little folding writing tables that extend off the arms of your chair, and mine kept falling down. Perhaps I should apply for special consideration?

apart from that, worked, worked and worked some more. I made a pie on Monday night, went to see Spellbound on Tuesday night (thumbs up) ,got drunk on Wednesday night, watched the triple Law & Order last night (that first SVU episode was TERRIFYING. Serial killer who guts and blinds his victims. Ugh.) and tonight I am supposed to go to Wollongong to see bands etc. We'll see.

A grey and rainy Sunday morning. Ho-hum. Was about to attack a huge pile of washing up, when Ben stumbled out of the bedroom, having just woken up, and boldly announced that he would do it. Hooray!

(this pile of washing up was mammoth. About 3 days worth, including the fallout from a drunken attempt at cooking. The man deserves a medal).

Went to Eli's new house last night. He's just moved into a massive terrace in Surry Hills. I'm deeply envious, I would love to live in a big house. Our house at the moment is nice, but tiny. It's the width that's the problem...it's a very skinny house. Fortunately both myself and Ben are rather skinny as well, so I suppose it suits us, but I really would like to have more space. You see, we are both horrendously messy people, and the smaller the house, the less crap you can leave lying around before the mess takes over and becomes unbearable. At the moment, we can only make about 2 days worth of mess before I get the urge to tidy. Which, in a normal-sized house, would only come over me about once a fortnight.

We watched Creep Show 2 at Eli's house. It's been a weekend of bad films. On Friday night, Nessy and Tim and Nicholas came over, and we ended up watching an atrocious late-night movie offering called 'Raging Angel'. Plot: struggling muso's girlfriend (also a struggling muso) auditions for a role in some play. Turns out that the play is being run by a crazy cult. Disaster unfolds. The whole thing was predicted by the male struggling muso's grandmother, who tries to warn him but is ignored. So she prays a lot and meets a grisly end, ie. being thrown down the stairs of her apartment building by some 'strange evil being' which oozes through the walls of her bedroom. That's as far as we watched before good sense took over.

Recipe Of The Week: Orange and Raspberry Cake
Ingredients
125g margarine
3/4 cup (165g) caster sugar
2 eggs, or egg replacer equivalent
1 1/2 cups (225g) self-raising flour
1/2 cup (125 mL) orange juice
3/4 cup raspberries. If you use frozen ones, don't thaw them, please.

1.Grease deep 20cm round cake pan, line base with baking paper, sprinkle with sugar. This helps your cakey to rise, as the mixture clings tenaciously to the sugar as it climbs up the sides of the pan.

2.Beat butter and sugar in medium bowl til all light and fluffy.

3.Beat in eggs one at a time, beating til just combined between additions. Or, if you are using egg replacer, divide it in half, pretend it's eggs and do the same.

4.Fold in flour and juice, in 2 alternate batches, ending with a flour batch.

5.Fold in 1/4 cup raspberries, gently now..

6.Now, assemble your cakey. Spread 3/4 of cake mixture into your pan, sprinkle with remaining raspberries. Spread with remaining cake mixture.

7. Bake in moderate oven (180 degrees) about 1 hour. Stand cake in pan 5 min, then cool on a wire rack.

8. Ice your creation. Orange or passionfruit icing would be nice with this one, I think. I usually just sift some icing sugar until I get sick of it, then add enough orange juice or passionfruit pulp to make a nice consistency.

9. Share with your friends and bask in praise (it'd be nice if you mentioned me, but if you don't, I'll forgive you). Or,
consume alone.
