Yes, it's been a while. I haven't felt like sharing, really. Mainly because every time I open my mouth lately, streams of worried, stressed gibberish seem to pour out. Bills, uni, jobs, mystery health problems etc etc etc etc. I'll try to refrain, or at least to express them in an interesting manner.
Happenings:
1. University. Well, it has started. I'm currently in two minds about whether or not going to the Conservatorium was the right decision. It's all very performance focussed. (is that how you spell focussed?). And seeing as musicology is basically pure academic research fun, this is probably not a good thing. Example: I'm doing a subject called 'Historical and Cultural Studies'. Which is basically medieval cultural studies, and looks extremely interesting. It's also a compulsory subject. The lecturer spent all of the first lecture desperately explaining why we had to do the course, and why it is valuable, even though it ain't performance or music-related. If no one can see why such a course would be valuable, or thinks that it might be interesting, perhaps it ain't the right uni for me. Ho-hum.
I have to do a presentation for musicology next week, about 'something that I find interesting'. So I'm going to talk about Einsturzende Neubaten. I figure it should be a fairly easy topic, as no one else seems to have heard of them therefore I can appear knowledgeable, and I can dazzle the class with overheads of funny-looking instruments to distract from my poor public speaking skills. By the way, if anyone reading this has any EN albums, in particular Haus de Luge with liner notes (I've only got a dodgy vinyl sample copy with no notes whatsoever), can I please borrow them? pretty please? I'll give you a cookie.. If you can lend me a copy of the doco about them, I'll give you two cookies.
2. Jobs. Yesterday I had a trial at the Shakespeares Pies down the road from uni. As you may or may not know, I used to work at Shakespeares at St Leonards, so it was all a bit too familiar. Hot, tiring and boring. I told the manager I'd have to 'think about it' but I think he's already decided that I will be working there. The main deterrent is the cleaning aspect of the job. As anyone who has ever been to my house will know, I'm not too big on cleaning. I also think that it would be a bad idea to trade in one crappy job for another equally crappy job that pays 40c less per hour.
At least I still remember how to make coffee. After one and a half years away from the machine, I managed to churn out a perfect latte, with a little heart drawn in the froth, first go. Well done, me.

Recipe Of The Week: Orange and Raspberry Cake
Ingredients
125g margarine
3/4 cup (165g) caster sugar
2 eggs, or egg replacer equivalent
1 1/2 cups (225g) self-raising flour
1/2 cup (125 mL) orange juice
3/4 cup raspberries. If you use frozen ones, don't thaw them, please.
1.Grease deep 20cm round cake pan, line base with baking paper, sprinkle with sugar. This
helps your cakey to rise, as the mixture clings tenaciously to the sugar as it climbs up the sides of the pan.
2.Beat butter and sugar in medium bowl til all light and fluffy.
3.Beat in eggs one at a time, beating til just combined between additions. Or, if you are using egg
replacer, divide it in half, pretend it's eggs and do the same.
4.Fold in flour and juice, in 2 alternate batches, ending with a flour batch.
5.Fold in 1/4 cup raspberries, gently now..
6.Now, assemble your cakey. Spread 3/4 of cake mixture into your pan, sprinkle with remaining raspberries.
Spread with remaining cake mixture.
7. Bake in moderate oven (180 degrees) about 1 hour. Stand cake in pan 5 min, then cool on a wire rack.
8. Ice your creation. Orange or passionfruit icing would be nice with this one, I think. I usually just sift some icing sugar until I get sick of it, then add enough orange juice or passionfruit pulp to make a nice consistency.
9. Share with your friends and bask in praise (it'd be nice if you mentioned me, but if you don't, I'll forgive you). Or,
consume alone.
